CSM Projects

CSM 1 - OUTREACH, TRAINING, AND SUPPORT

Outreach, training and support activities are an integral part of the CSM program at the ASC MSRC. Full and effective use of computational resources is almost solely dependent upon these activities. In an effort to improve outreach, training, and support, many activities have been planned in close collaboration with the ARL MSRC.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

The objective is to deliver high-quality cost-effective training, outreach and support to CSM users at ASC MSRC. This will be accomplished through close collaboration with the ARL MSRC. The CSM CTA at ASC MSRC has had remarkable success at identifying new users who directly benefit from training and usage of MSRC resources. CSM training courses, seminars and short courses is a key ingredient in technology transfer and modernization of key DoD research programs.

DELIVERABLES

The following training events will be delivered to address the needs of DoD CSM users:

  • MSC PATRAN and/or NASTRAN training
  • LS-DYNA3D training via MBONE broadcast from ARL MSRC
  • CTH-DICE training in collaboration with ARL MSRC
  • Seminar on computational consideration of fluid-structure interactions
  • Introducing EOS and Failure Models into CTH
  • CAPTools training broadcast to ARL via MBONE
  • iSIGHT training Broadcast to ARL via MBONE

Support will be given for the following:

  • Key users of CAPTools or other semiautomatic parallelizing tools
  • Key users of iSIGHT or other optimization software
  • Algorithm improvement for the ADM code
  • T90 compilation of LLNL DYNA3D; collaboration with ARL MSRC
  • Other types of key user support issues

CUSTOMERS

Customers include any CSM users with HPC accounts at ASC, ARL, NAVO and CEWES MSRCs.

BENEFIT TO THE WARFIGHTER

Outreach, Training and Support activities are an integral part of the CSM program at the ASC MSRC. Effective use of computational resources is almost solely dependent upon outreach to users throughout the DoD, including defense contractors. CSM training courses, seminars and short courses is a key ingredient in technology transfer and modernization of key DoD research programs. In addition, effective use of HPC resource will improve performance and reduce delivery time and cost for DoD weapons and products.

PROJECT DEPENDENCIES AND SCOPE

This project depends on the collaboration and coordination of the ASC and ARL CSM groups, the Training staff at ASC and ARL MSRCs and various software vendors. Primary contacts for the NCSA CSM Group: D. O'Neal, H. Hilton, and C. Beldica.

RISK ELEMENT

The risk element for this project is very low. Scheduling new training events will require coordination between staff at ASC and ARL MSRCs. However, seminars, short courses and training are prime methods for outreach. Travel will be required for outreach, training and support.
