Research Objectives:

The NCSA CSM Group, in collaboration with the ARL PET training team, conducted the first ever web-based survey on CSM training needs among DoD researchers. 72 researchers from ASC, ARL, Navy, and other DoD facilities responded to the Survey. The survey results showed considerable interests among researchers in CSM short courses, as shown in the following figure. Furthermore, the Survey showed that the majority of the respondents are frequent or occasional users of HPC facilities. The Survey provides excellent guidelines for future CSM short course offerings.

NCSA CSM Group member Prof. Jimmy Hsia and his students collaborated with Prof. Alan Needleman at Brown University to simulate oscillatory crack propagation and crack branching behavior under thermal shock loading. The simulations clearly show that, even under purely symmetric loading, crack propagation may take a zig- zag path or even branch into multiple cracks in brittle materials when driving force is high.
